A trip to Phila-balti-delphia-more

Almost a month after our much heralded west coast trip, we decided we needed to go visit friends on the east coast as well.

On Thursday,we shipped off to Baltimore to visit my old college buddies Josh and Brian

Here is me with Brian (reluctantly wearing the Texas visor I got him), Josh (fully embracing the visor) and Josh's fiancee Tina (supporting visor usage by both of them)Brian and Josh both had an assortment of home brew beers for us to drink. Brian impressively brought a keg of homemade Guinness which tasted unbelievable! Josh also had a good home brew of his own although his bottling methods were a little less orthodox. Here is the nalgene brew and the "prison wine" brew. These were just okay, but the ones that made it into the bottles were great.

After home brews at Josh's apartment, we set out for a Baltimore adventure. At the Lexington Market, Roxanne and I had easily the best oysters we have ever had in our lives! These were utterly unbelievable! Below you can see Roxanne tackling a big one!

Next we walked to Baltimore harbor. On the way there we walked by Camden yard. Below we are standing next to Cal Ripkin Jr.'s gravestone.

Here is Brian and I on the harbor. THe USS constellation is behind us.
Here is a view from the top of Federal Hill overlooking the harbor leading to the Chesapeake... As you can see someone else was also enjoying the view that day. He was evidently so moved he took his shirt off.
We proceeded to a pub on Federal Hill for dinner, I had a Maryland Burger (a regular burger with crab piled high). We then proceeded to a bar downtown and partied it up with the locals. At the bar, Josh warned me about the local beer "Natty Bo", but I had to taste one for myself. I can honestly say it was the worst beer I have ever tasted period, and I am no stranger to bad beer (as you will see later). In the morning I caught josh playing Wii with himself using both controllers for a 2 man tennis game.
After some delightful afternoon sushi featuring more Maryland softshell blue crab, Russ picked Rx and I up and took us to Philly. Here is the skyline coming in to town.
Russ tolerated the visor pretty well, but we already knew from his previous visit to Tx. That he is okay with sporting Texas apparel.
We went to a great Greek restaurant that night and then met up with some of R & R's friends at a trendy Philly bar.

After the night out Russ and Roxanne play some paper rock scissors, It looks like Russ got her this time, I am sure it comes from all the practice.
Rachel (aka Gizmo) looks on at the two amateurs... The next day we went to fulfill a craving that had been gnawing at us both for weeks: Philly Cheese Steaks. We got ours at Geno's probably the most famous cheese steak vendor on the south side. I got a provolone cheese steak. Roxanne got a lot of street credit for ordering hers just like the natives "wit wiz" (translation: with onions, with cheeze whiz). As you can see, there was quite a line. After that we toured the Mutter Museum! An awesome hours of medical oddities, bones, fetuses, and other body parts. They dont allow pictures inside, this link shows some of the stuff inside though.

We then hit some beautiful chocolate delicacies at a local coffee shop
Here is everyone enjoying the Schuykill River view.Later on, Brian and Josh met back up with us in Philly after dropping Tina off at the airport. We all headed down to a Jamacian place for Jerked chicken etc. Brian had the Oxtail stew, it was surprisingly delicious!

After dinner we headed to Bob and Barbara's a well known, quite eclectic Philly bar featuring Jazz flute, and PBR everything... Lets just say this... we drank a lot of PBRs. For some reason, we kept stacking them up higher and higher, it was a lot of fun. I felt like a kid with Lego's (a drunk kid). Gang signs were flying... Fun was had...Russ surprisingly got this to balance for a minute or two...

Check out this pair of Diana Ross impersonators we saw...

After Bob and Barbara's we retired to a Belgian bar and enjoyed some Trappists brews. We saw off our friends Josh and Brian that night as they had to get back to their respective dogs...

On Sunday we did more fun touristy stuff like getting our picture taken at the famous LOVE statue...

At the Art museum, I pulled a Rocky and ran up the stairs in triumph!!

We saw about 10 other people do the same thing in about a 2 minute span of time. I love how the stairs to the art museum is a bigger attraction than the actual art museum. We then headed down to ye ole liberty bell. Rachel pointed out that the brochures are quick to tell you that it is a gap and not a crack in the bell... it started out as a crack though...

Here are the ladies at Independence Hall... This is the bell tower where the liberty bell used to hang. The first continental congress was held in this building, the Declaration of Independence was signed here, the first supreme court, senate, congress, were all here... The constitution was also ratified here!
Below is a copy of the articles of confederation... We didnt get to look and see what is on the back, but I have a hunch, some national treasure lies there...
Here is the room where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed! So much History.. our patriotism was deeply stirred.
We left on Monday morning. We weren't eager to come back. We felt very urban, walking everywhere, and living in the big city for a while...We knew we were in Texas when an 8 foot tall pick up truck zoomed by us.... oh well...

Mysterious Package

Since GW has posted us on Orange alert today, Jack and I were a little concerned when we received a mysterious package in the mail. It had no return address...could it be Anthrax or an explosive....certainly! One only knows that they're out to get us in Austin.....

Well, we got over our fear and decided, 'if we're going to go, we'll go together' and opened it.

A surprise from our friends, Laurel and Demian awaited us!

Precious, precious Spotted Cow, our beloved (and now well-traveled) plastic tiger, a great picture of the creepiest old dude ever, toffee, hot-chili pistachios and, of course, "The Isthmus"..a local Madison newspaper...just to make us even more nostalgic....ahhh, good old Madison liberals, they're awesome.
Thanks guys!!!

We're not so different.. you and I...

Hook em horns....

I apologize in advance for turning this blog away from its original mission (an online repository of louie/cat pictures intermingled with pics of our happenings about town) to a semi-political news blotter as of late. It has obviously had a deleterious effect, according to the comment section our readership is way down. I just couldnt keep my mouth shut about this one though. . .

I read this article about Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Evidently he thinks a "hidden imam" is directing him and Iran. "The Imam Mahdi is in charge of the world and we see his hand directing all the affairs of the country." Wow, what a backwards country Iran must be that their leader actually thinks that a supernatural being has an active role in shaping the policies/decisions/outcome of the nation. Oh wait, I forgot, I live in a country like that too.

George Bush says that God told him to invade Iraq and Afghanistan and he talks to him on a regular basis. So that's great. Both the leaders of these 2 countries have great gazoo's on their shoulders telling them to do things. Hey GW, if God tells you to do something immensely stupid that costs thousands of lives, and weakens our status at home and abroad, and creates new terrorists... maybe it isnt God saying those things.... If it is, it is not a God I want to worship thats for sure.

I also love how this strategy absolves them both of all responsibility for running their respective countries in the crapper. What, you have a problem with the invasion of Iraq and pre-emptive strikes based on faulty intelligence? Well, God told me to do it, so if you are against it, you are against God!

What, you have a problem with me spending millions enriching uranium that will eventually lead to the obliteration of our country even though we sit on a hotbed of natural gas and oil that already meets all our energy needs, and we should be using this money to address the abject poverty and lack of infrastructure? Well, did I tell you that the hidden imam told me to do it?! If you are against it, you are against the hidden imam.
Great, our leaders are interchangable.
It not only rationalizes their actions to themselves (which I am sure they need to do) but to their fanatical base as well.... Wait, did he say he talks to God? Hey, I worship that guy too! I will stop questioning his actions and motives and give him my full support!! Reason and critical thinking were hurting my brain anyway, now I dont have to use it, so that's great!!
The fact that our world leaders do not use reason and logic to make decisions should make everyone ask the question: Why the hell are we allowing this?

Okay, back to Louie pics and travel logs. For now... for now....

in the news

I just read this story about Donald Rumsfeld.
It puts him in a whole new light, before this I thought of him solely as a evil, megalomaniac, psychopath, warmonger, but now I see him as something else: a bumbling (yet still evil) Mr. Magoo-like idiot/liar/weasel.

Material Possessions!!

To fill the void in our lives we are going to try to accumulate material possessions! Actually, the buying spree all started because we needed a new mattress. To be more specific Roxanne needed a new mattress, I was perfectly comfortable in the 5 inch divot in our Sealy mattress with the pillow top. I just thought of it as a hammock. Roxanne's divot (although less spectacular than my grand canyon divot) was painful for her back. What made this particularly frustrating was that we just got the Sealy in October, and it sucked so bad we had to get rid of it in less than 6 months!

Anyway, we splurged on a tempurpedic mattress, it was recommended by nearly everyone we asked and Rx's doctor as well! Although their logo is a little racy, we decided to go with it....
If we were getting a new mattress, we decided we should get an actual bed frame as well. We trusted the Swedes with the space age memory foam mattress, so we decided to go with them on the frame as well. .. . ..Next stop Ikea!!!

For those who have never been, Ikea is quite an experience. Their furniture ranges from utterly utilitarian and cheap to high quality and expensive. Although at either end of the spectrum it is usually a bargain as you have to put it together yourself. Also, the store is huge! You get a map when you enter, it is like a big maze, kind of intimidating the first time, the novelty wears off the second time, and it was annoying the third time when we knew exactly where we needed to go, but had to use a GPS unit to get there. They sell Swedish meatballs there too which is neat although you have to assemble them yourself with meat, sauce and an Allen wrench.

Here are our new friends Mark and Kelly helping us with the bed assembly after we commandeered their vehicle to put all the boxes in.

Since we were getting a new bed frame, it wasn't that big of a stretch to get a new bedroom set and desk. After all, why have a cherry new bed and surround it by the same old 10 year old wal- mart crap desk and the dresser I have had since I was 5 years old?

Here is my new dresser, assembly was a doosey , but we got it done...

Below is Roxanne's mini-dresser with folding mirror top, our new bookcase with fancy frosted glass door, our new desk with a really heavy frosted glass top, an Ikea lamp, and Ikea wood storage shelves! Those Swedes sure did a number on us...

Louie watches over the last unassembled piece, a small night stand. My goal for tonight is to get it assembled and tomorrow we will rearrange things to make it look awesome and magical. Our bedroom is currently more Swedish than Anders Celsius!!!As usual, Bunny is unamused....
